![]() The poem takes the reader through the journey of the author taking on new character traits. ![]() Terrance Hayes’ poem conveys the theme that changes that are made in yourself, start with you. As the author progressed through the story, it felt as if a burden was taken off him and the reader. The mood of the poem was similar to the tone. When he takes on the role of the huge black bull, the tone changes to one of freedom. When he takes on the role of the black-eyed animal with wings, the tone is restricted and stuck, like how he felt at the time in his life. The tone is neutral and positive and the author tells the story as if he is the animal. ![]() This comparison affects the tone and mood of the poem. Metaphors are very prevalent in the poem, “American Sonnet for My Past and Future Assassin.” The author mentions that inside of him is a black-eyed animal with wings and a huge black bull. ![]()
